The Central Asian Network of Academic Society (NAS) in Central Asia promotes interaction and knowledge exchange between representatives of educational institutions involved in the management of environment, water, land and energy resources in the context of climate change. NAS provides an opportunity for universities to work with international and regional experts, develop new or improve existing educational courses, prepare necessary methodological material, and train their faculty in new approaches and modern tools.

Training of trainers on “Water Diplomacy and International Water Law”

This training on “Water Diplomacy and International Water Law” is organized under the USAID Regional Water and Environment Project, and Blue Peace Central Asia Initiative (BPCA) funded by Switzerland. The International Secretariat for Water (Canada) is a partner of the event.

The USAID Regional Water and Environment Activity under Component 1 on Capacity Building and Education initiated the development of a full-fledged course “Water Diplomacy and International Water Law” for undergraduate/graduate students CA universities. The course involves 15 hours of theory and 30 hours of seminars and is assessed for 5 credits. The course content was developed in cooperation with members of the Network of Academic Societies (NAS).

Celebration of the Amu Darya River Day on the regional level
Celebration of the Amu Darya River Day on the regional level

The organization of River Day events for the Amu Darya River Basin is based on proposals from the Activity’s national partners. The celebration helps raise awareness in the region about water use and management in the basin and involves young people in dialogue on water management. Earlier this year, the Activity organized a series of River Day events at the national level in each of the four basin countries – Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Activities at the national level also widely involved youth through drawing and essay contests, water-theme video competitions, and river clean-up activities.

Round table on smart agriculture: technologies and and benefits for Central Asia

During the meeting, special attention will be given to issues of water security, water and land degradation (e.g. soil erosion, salinization, sedimentation due to soil degradation in watersheds, etc.), the relationship between agricultural productivity and water use efficiency, the role the agricultural sector in meeting certain national commitments to reduce CO2 emissions, etc.

Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus Lecture: Mechanisms for increasing carbon sequestration for ecosystem restoration

The 20th edition of the WEFE Nexus lecture series will look more closely at the topic of carbon sequestration, the mechanisms for its operation, and explore the potential of (and steps needed for) the USAID ERAS-I Oasis project to earn the necessary certification.

The event is organized by the USAID Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity in cooperation with the Water Resources Service of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic.  Within the framework of the event, a photo contest among the media and a video contest among schoolchildren were held.

Yesterday in Nurek, Tajikistan, the Activity organized the third of four scheduled River Day celebrations this spring in Central Asia for promoting the role of youth for improved water conservation and calling attention to the need for water sector reform to ensure sustainable water management.

The events included a meeting with stakeholders to discuss water management issues in the Amu Darya River Basin, tree planting and clean-up activities along the Shavat Canal, and an award ceremony for winning students in the art contest on the theme, "The Amu Darya is a River of Friendship.”

USAID Central Asia’s Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity organized the 4th National Intersectoral Committee meeting, a platform for national experts and representatives from seven water-related ministries to discuss how the Water-Energy-Food-Environment Nexus approach (WEFE Nexus) can improve water management and climate change resilience in the country, and to review the results and plans of the Activity.

On February 7 and 10, 33 lecturers and professors from the Academy of Civil Service under the President of Turkmenistan (Ashgabat) and the Turkmen Agricultural Institute (Dashoguz) learnt about the interactions between water, energy, food and environment security through the Interactive Nexus Simulation game, conducted by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in cooperation with USAID Central Asia’s Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity (WAVE).
