Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus Lecture: International Water Law: Linkages between Water Law and Nexus Approach

Achieving sustainable development in river basins, including in Central Asia, requires effective coordination in decision-making and planning over the use of natural resources - water, energy and land.

International water law offers an overarching framework for addressing a broad range of water-related challenges that span across scales (international vs regional), sectors (energy, agriculture, environment) and disciplines (political, economic, societal and environmental).

In Central Asia water resources are vital for both: hydropower generation and agricultural production. Low water quality impacts on human health and the environment.

  • What can international water law offer to solve these challenges and pave the way to the sustainable development of water resources in Central Asia?

  • Is international water law currently cover different sectors of the economy?

  • Are countries ready to follow the principles of international water law?

For the fifth Lecture, please join Dr. Barbara Janusz-Pawletta, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, UNESCO Chairholder for Water Resources Management at the Kazakh-German University (DKU), as she is recognized expert on international water law and explores the water law aspects for Central Asian region and pay attention to promotion IWRM and Nexus approaches.
