Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus Lecture: WEFE Nexus approach practical implementation in Central Asian countries: Tuyamuyun reservoir

There are about 280 reservoirs in Central Asia (CA) designed to regulate the seasonal and annual river flow. Most of them are multifunctional and are used for agricultural needs, water supply, hydropower generation, and flood protection.

Water reservoirs in the region are subject to intense negative processes of pollution and silting, as well as clogging caused by mountainous terrain. For example, due to the increased rate of siltation, the CA countries cannot fully use the water resources of the Amudarya River to cover their irrigation and energy needs. In this regard, it is very important to consider the application of the Nexus approach for wastewater management to minimize cross-sectoral water supply problems and achieve maximum social well-being, since large reservoirs are multipurpose reservoirs.

As part of our lecture, we will consider the implementation of the Nexus approach using the example of one of the largest water management facilities in the Amudarya river basin - the Tuyamuyun hydroelectric complex. The transboundary facility, located on the border between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, is an excellent example of the Nexus approach - the interconnection of the main elements - "water-energy-food".

Since the problem of silting is typical for flat reservoirs in Central Asia, the example of Tuyamuyun can be useful for other countries as well.

During the lecture we will discuss the following questions:

  1. Why do we consider such facilities as the Tuyamuyunsky hydroelectric complex as part of the implementation of the Nexus approach?
  2. How the application of the Nexus approach can help solve the problem of silting, pollution, clogging, and other problems with reservoirs in the region.
  3. How can the Nexus approach promote dialogue between the two countries to improve coordination between the administration of such (hydropower) facilities?

The seventh lecture will be organized as a panel discussion, and we are pleased to introduce our distinguished participant, Ms. Aksulu Kushanova, the Energy Investment Specialist at Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia, Almaty.
